This fascinating two-volume set includes a photographic facsimile of ananonymous seventeenth-century Italian gardener's notebook from DumbartonOak's Rare Books Collection. Used by two gardeners during differentyears, it is a record of the planting of three flower gardens at SanLorenzo. It is now believed that the gardens were created for Margheritade Medici Farnese, duchess of Parma and Piacenza. The notebook providesinsight into the creation of a seventeenth-century garden, fromidentifying flowers to planning flowerbeds, and these sketches in turnreveal the gardeners' own intentions and reflections on the designs.
