This is acatalogue of all lichens reported from Italy. Non-lichenized fungi are not included, with the exception of a) species belonging to genera including also lichenized taxa, b) species which were traditionally considered as lichenized in the earlier literature. The catalogue should serve as a reference for lichenologists interested in the lichen flora of Italy and of the Mediterranean area. It is the first national check-list produced within a project for a Check-list of MediterraneanLichens, promoted by the International Organization for the Phyto-Taxonomical Investigation of the Mediterranean Are (O.P.T.I.M.A.).For each of the 2145 infrageneric taxa accepted in the catalogue, the following data are given: a) basionym, b) relevant synonyms,particularly epithets used by Italian authors, c) all literature records, including the main exsiccata, subdivided into 20 administrative subdivisions of the country, d) the distributional note contained in the flora of JATA (1909-11), e) a brief comment on the general distributionand ecology, and on the distribution in Italy. Dubious taxa and/ordubious records are listed in appendixes to each genus. The book includes a brief historical outline of lichenological research in Italy,and in each of the 20 administrative regions, an extensive list of freferences, listing more than 1400 consulted papers and an index to ca.8000 infrageneric epithets.
