Much important botanical research concernedwith arctic ecology is carried out in the Soviet Union, but is seldomavailable in English. Dr. Alexandrova's book is based on data previously published only in Russian, and on her own extensive researchin the Northern areas of the Soviet Arctic. Dividing the high Arctic into areas based on the characteristics of their vegetation, the bookpresents a probing analysis of the ecology of such regions worldwide. After describing the general characteristics, geographic and climatic,of this latitude, the book discusses in more detail the region'speculiarities of soil and microclimate, followed by an analysis of theplant communities. Using this information, and her own classificationof the plant aggregations, Dr. Alexandrova goes on to draw conclusionson the environmental adaptations of the vegetation, in terms of both their morphology and seasonal development.
