New Survey of Clare Island
Vol. 07: Plants and Fungi. 2015. 83 col. figs. 3 fold - out illustrations. X, 354 p. gr8vo. Hardcover.
This volume records the vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens and fungi recorded during the Royal Irish Academy's New Survey of Clare Island. It includes a description of the likely Holocene vegetation cover and its development over the past 5000 years, and an analysis of the present vegetation using modern phytotaxonomic methods. The volume is extensively illustrated with photographs, tables, diagrams and detailed fold-out maps. The rich diversity of species recorded allows comparisons with the first Survey of Clare Island, carried out one hundred years ago by Robert Lloyd Praeger of the Royal Irish Academy and an international team of specialists. The data published here provides a baseline for assessing future changes in species occurrence and distribution on the island, perhaps as a result of climate change and further anthropomorphic interventions. Some of the assemblages of species on the North Atlantic island are unique and worthy of statutory protection.
