The revision of the genus Batrachospermum in Brazil involved the study of 27 species representative of two subgenera (Acarposporophytum and Batrachospermum).Subgenera Batrachospermum have six sections (Aristatae,Batrachospermum, Contorta, Hybrida, Turficola and Hybrida) represented in Brazil. Sections Batrachospermum, Turficola and Viridia were emended.Five species are new records for Brazil, including two new species, B.densiverticillatum (Section Contorta) and B. longiarticulatum (SectionAristatae). Keys were provided to the subgenera, sections and species studied. A general treatment of altitudinal, latitudinal and seasonal distributions of Brazilian taxa was included. For each species studied the following information was presented: a) reference to the original description, b) basyonym, c) synonyms, d) nomenclatural type, c) type locality, f) description, accompanied with illustrations (photograph and line-drawings), g) diagnostic features, h) world distribution, i)distribution in Brazil, accompanied with map, j) habitat and associated species, k) seasonality, l) comments concerning taxonomic and/or nomenclatural problems involved, comparison with data in papers based on Brazilian and foreign material, as well as other relevant information.
