In Australia, 75 per cent of the rainforests have been destroyed sinceEuropean settlement and they are rapidly losing the remainder of theseliving floral and faunal museums through burning, agriculture, mining, logging, road building and real estate development. In 1983, a workshopon the past, present and future of Australia's rainforests was held atGriffith University, Queensland, bringing together experts in all fieldsof rainforest research. To make this material more generally available, the Australian Heritage Commission decided to publish the proceedingsas a three-volume set in its "Special Australian Heritage PublicationSeries". This, the first volume of the set, details the nature, distribution and status of Australian rainforest types. The othervolumes will cover such topics as rainforest fauna, the history ofAustralia's rainforests, forest dynamics and rainforest values andpolitics.
