The vegetation of the Arctic and Antarctic is classified according todiagnostic and characteristic features. The Arctic is divided into twoprovinces, tundra and polar desert, while the Antarctic is divided intosubantarctic herbaceous cushion vegetation and antarctic polar desert.The arctic tundra is further divided into subarctic with shrubbyBetula (birch) or true arctic tundra without Betula. The end result isan analysis of plant communities in the polar regions that enablesecologists to generalise and, perhaps more important, to limit correctlythe scope of that generalisation when it is drawn from careful localstudies.
