Plants in Archeology. Identification manual of artefacts of plant origin from Europe and the Mediterranean to circa. 1500. Publ. 2000. illus. XIII, 512 p. Hardcover.

Some 80 entries on Dicots, some 20 entries on Monocots, 9 on Conifers, and 2 on Cryptogams. The entries give information on botany, historicuses, presence in the Archeological Record and a relevant anatomicaldescription. This last depends on what the plant was used for andwhich parts might be found in the Archeological Record. Only thefibres are described of Cotton (Gossypium) and Flax (Linum), of Lime(Tilia) both the wood (used for carving, etc.) and the bark (used asrope for a very long time) are described. The entries are accompaniedby the occasional picture of a historical object and by excellentanatomical photomicrographs. As the book treats some rather unusualtaxa there are a number of best-ever anatomical photographs for quitea few species. Many tables serve as an aid to identification bylisting anatomical features, or when and for what a particular plant wasused. Finally a glossary of technical terms is given.
