Plant names of Manipour. etymology, eponymy, legends and systematics. 2019. illus.(b/w). 1 map (b/w) 474 p. gr8vo. Hardcover.

This book provides a comprehensive information of modern scientific names and various vernacular plant names of Manipur. All the floristic and ethnobotanical knowledge for a particular community are transmitted from one generation to next generation in the medium of vernacular names. Modern scientific discipline tries to identity and interpret the properties of the plants through Latinized sr.ientific name according to International Code of Nomenclature for Algae, Fungi and Plants. The state of Manipur lies within the lndo-Burma hotspot region and has rich floral resources with tremendous ethnobotanical knowledge. Absence of comprehensive book for providing correct scientific names for various vernacular names have resulted in confusion, misidentification and improper interpretation of botanical studies in the past. Any studies associated with exploring and validating the traditional knowledge, linking and mapping the correct scientific name to the vernacular name always remain indispensable process. Acknowledging these necessities, the book tries to prepare a dictionary of plant names that include not only scientific names and vernacular names but that also includes etymological origin, meanings and various sociocultural perspectives for furthering the botanical studies and unmasking the hitherto unknown traditional knowledge in the country. This book is the first of its kind that integrates vernacular plant names of Manipur with their accepted scientific names, standardized according to the present International conventions, along with scientific and traditional knowledge.

The book is divided into two sections. The first section provides an account in which the naming plants have changed with time and necessity for its change. These taxonomic progression have been highlighted along with the necessity for conforming botanical and horticultural names of plants to internationally agreed standards. The second section comprises a glossary of generic and specific plant names having vernacular names of different communities in Manipur.
