A checklist of vascular plants serves as fundamental baseline data on the flora of a specific natural geographic region or administrative unit, providing a foundation for ecological and evolutionary research. Species cataloging is a key topic in global biodiversity research, and keeping species checklists up to date is crucial for both biodiversity studies and practical efforts in conservation and utilization. The complex climatic and physiographic conditions of Central Asia have fostered a diverse flora comprising over 10,000 species of vascular plants. To facilitate the utilization of these plant resources, comprehensive floras for the various Central Asian countries and regions were published during the Soviet era, providing robust support for botanical research in the area. However, following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, funding for scientific research in Russia and the Central Asian nations contracted, leading to a decline in botanical research activity. Although these countries have attempted to conduct relevant studies, efforts have largely been limited to summarizing existing work; there has been a lack of effective data management and further analysis, and—given the age of the earlier publications—the taxonomic status of many plant groups has since changed. To better conserve and utilize Central Asia's plant resources, it is essential to compile a comprehensive biodiversity checklist for the entire region. Based on a synthesis and analysis of published floras and checklists from the five Central Asian nations (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan), this book presents a checklist of approximately 9,000 vascular plant species. Entries for each species include the family name, genus name, scientific name, primary synonyms, and distribution range.
