Band 3 der "Ökologie der Erde" behandelt die größte zusammenhängende Landmasse auf der Erde: den größten Teil der gemäßigten und arktischen Zonen Eurasiens mit einer Fläche von rund 40 Mio. km2. Das riesige Gebiet dieses Großkontinents ist erst im letzten Jahrhundert ökologisch erforscht worden. Der Band berücksichtigt den ozeanisch geprägten Laubwald, die kontinentalen Nadelwälder, die jeweiligen Übergänge zur Waldtundra und Tundra, zur Steppe und Halbwüste sowie die verschiedenen Wüsten mit kalter Jahreszeit. Zugehörige Gebirgsräume (Orobiome), insbesondere Pamir und Tibet werden ebenfalls auf Basis neuester Publikationen und Ergebnisse dargestellt. Volume 3 of the "Ecology of the Earth" deals with the largest contiguous land mass on earth: the largest part of the temperate and arctic zones of Eurasia with an area of ??around 40 million km2. The vast area of ??this great continent was only explored ecologically in the last century. The results in this volume provide a comprehensive and detailed impression of the ecosystems there, and the literature evaluated is so far unique in its detail and completeness.

The volume takes into account the oceanic deciduous forest, the continental coniferous forests, the respective transitions to the forest tundra and tundra, to the steppe and semi-desert as well as the various deserts with a cold season. Associated mountain areas (orobiomes), in particular the Pamir and Tibet, are also presented on the basis of the latest publications and results. The largely uniform structure of the individual chapters (climate, soil, producers, consumers, destructors, ecosystem processes, oro- and pedobiomes and zono-ecotones) facilitates the scientific comparison of different areas.
