Presents the results of a study on a formerly large metapopulation ofthe Scarce Swallowtail in South-Western Germany. Habitat preferences ofeggs and larval stages are quantified and the general decline andfinally the extinction is thoroughly documented. It is a typical example of the effects of insufficient conservation measures, whichmainly resulted from wrong prioritisation and from ignoring availableknowledge.
