From the preface: Taxonomically, biologically as well asphytopathologically, the powdery mildews represent a well characterized,natural unit of pathogens on a wide range of phanerogams, including numerous economically important cultivated plants. At present, there isa renewed interest in all directions of scientific investigations on powdery mildews, e.g. biochemistry, genetics, epidemiology, control etc.Plant protection and plant pathology institutions in nearly all parts ofthe world have always to deal with this group of parasitic fungi.Therefore, the urgent need for a modern, solid taxonomic base for the Erysiphaceae is hardly surprising. Salmon's (1900) monograph of the family and Jaczewski's (1927) comprehensive treatment are badly out of date. The present book is a taxonomic monograph that provides up todate, world-wide coverage of the taxonomy and nomenclature of the powdery mildews. Includes extensive descriptions of all recognized taxa. Almost all species are depicted. The determination of the species is possible by means of different keys.
