Afforestation. Policies, Planning and Progress. 1993. figs. tabs. 223 p. gr8vo. Hard cover.

Deforestation is a global issue that attracts much concern, with thefate of the tropical rain forest in particular at the forefront of thedebate. However, this has tended to overshadow the achievements ofafforestation, especially but not only in the developed world. In manycountries the forest area has rapidly expanded (and in some cases morethan doubled) during the present century. Extensive afforestation isexpected over the next few years in countries as diverse as Britain andIreland on the one hand, and Chile and New Zealand on the other. The aimof this volume is to provide a comparative review of selected nationalexperiences of afforestation within a broad framework that establishesthe global extent and significance of the process, focussing on majorissues of policy and achievement rather than on technical details ofsilviculture. Individual chapters on national experiences cover topicssuch as the extent, type and pattern of afforestation, policy settingand problems enountered. European countries, which generally have hadlonger experiences of afforestation, are considered first. The focusthen switches to the more diverse set of experiences of non-Europeancountries.
