The need for and benefits from fertilizers used in modern agricultureare well recognised. However, heavy and often indiscriminate use offertilizers in industrial countries has become a threat to ourenvironment, while in developing countries increases in crop yield areof vital importance and will depend largely on the most efficient useof fertilizers. Energy and other inputs have become more costly. Therefore, emphasis in research must be put on maximizing theefficiency of mineral fertilizers. Alternative and highly efficientways of supplying essential nutrients would help to alleviate problemsin both highly developed and less developed countries, leading to anincrease in the productivity of crops and minimizing the loss ofnutrients to the environment under conditions of intensive agriculture. In recent years, interest in foliar fertilization as a supplementarymethod of plant nutrition to soil fertilization has grown; it will findmore use in future in fine-tuning crop nutrition.
