Regnell moved after his graduation and training as a doctor to Caldas, Brasil. He ran a lucrative practice and was a very skilled doctor. He invested in plantations and became also a money-lender. His main interest, however, was botany. His herbarium holds over 400.000 specimens and is one of the largest collections of South American plants in the world, now held by the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm.
