The book was written to encourage both amateur and professional botanists to take up an interest in California's mosses. Mosses aretruly remarkable plants. Many are able to survive desiccation that would quickly kill even the hardiest of vascular plants. Mosses are beautiful, too, and some are important players in the state's water resources. As a guide, the book relies more on images than on words.With more than 2200 full-colour photographs and 1100 black-and -whitedrawings, it illustrates all but five of the state's 600 moss species.
