The present volume features twelve scientific papers presented at the9th International Chrysophyte Symposium (ICS9) in Yamagata, Japan in2016. Ten of the twelve papers in this volume deal with chrysophytes /synurophytes, the remaining two with diatoms. The volume is subdivided into four distinct parts: taxonomy, biodiversity, culture work, and palaeoecology. The first part includesdiscussion of Clathromonas and Paraphysomonas from the MediterraneanSea, and the descriptions of two new taxa (Chrysosphaerella nichollsiifrom West Java and Aneumastus mongolotusculus from Mongolia), whilethe second part describes living assemblages in lakes, bogs or puddlesfrom China, Russia and Vietnam. The third part presents new data on the formation of lipids in fourspecies of Chaetoceros, while the last part describes the use of aFlowCam for cyst morphometric studies, introduces fossil assemblagesfrom the Southern Ocean, and revisits the naming vs. numbering problemfor stomatocysts. This volume continues the tradition of providing up-to-dateinformation and ideas on the chrysophytes, synurophytes and relatedalgae. It also reflects the diversity of topics that are currentlybeing studied by specialists around the world; these include not onlystudies on freshwater habitats, but also marine habitats, in additionto fossil assemblages in land-based and deep-sea cores, too.
