Companion to Chopra's Glossary of Indian Medicinal Plants. 1987. 162 p. gr8vo. Cloth.

Chopra and his colleagues published a "A Glossary of Indian Medicinal Plants" (1956) and a "Supplement" (1969) which are classic publications and provide very valuable information on the medicinal properties and distribution of a large number of plants used in India. These compendia are extensively consulted by research workers and others interested in herbal drugs. However, since their publication, considerable advance has been made in plant taxonomy with the result that the nomenclatures of several plants listed in them have become obsolete. The present publication, based on a through literature survey of the flora of India and recent revisions and monographs, presents the currently accepted binomials. The authors have made a comprehensive and critical study ofthe nomenclature and updated the binomials of 580 species of plants out of 2931 listed in the "Glossary" and its "Supplement" and corrected author citations and orthographic errors of another 520 species. The"Companion" is a complete checklist of the currently accepted names ofall the plants reported in the "Glossary" and its "Supplement".
