Chopra and his colleagues published a "A Glossary of Indian MedicinalPlants" (1956) and a "Supplement" (1969) which are classic publicationsand provide very valuable information on the medicinal properties anddistribution of a large number of plants used in India. These compendiaare extensively consulted by research workers and others interested inherbal drugs. However, since their publication, considerable advance hasbeen made in plant taxonomy with the result that the nomenclatures ofseveral plants listed in them have become obsolete. The presentpublication, based on a through literature survey of the flora of Indiaand recent revisions and monographs, presents the currently acceptedbinomials. The authors have made a comprehensive and critical study ofthe nomenclature and updated the binomials of 580 species of plants outof 2931 listed in the "Glossary" and its "Supplement" and correctedauthor citations and orthographic errors of another 520 species. The"Companion" is a complete checklist of the currently accepted names ofall the plants reported in the "Glossary" and its "Supplement".
