The present survey treats the distribution and ecology of the bryophyte species of Europe including Macaronesia. Distribution includes occurrence with vegegation zones, regions differing with respect to the degree of oceanic / continental climate and altitudinal belts.Threat categories on European level are indicated. Ecological amplitudes are treated with respect to the site characteristics,particularly acidity, nutrient availability, pollution, humidity,heat balance, substrate quality and human impact (hemerobic steps).A characterization of life strategy type and the occurrence of species within bryophyte synusiae and plant community types are also given.
