Synopsis: The present book was idealized with the intention of divulging the current state of research on periphyton in Brazil and, in this sense, it was quite successful. The 15 chapters that compose it approach the concept of periphyton and its taxonomic and ecological diversity; a scientometric approach to the trends and gaps of its study in the country; the role of periphyton in nutrient cycling and in the trophic web; the colonization and succession of the periphytic community; the periphytic community in rivers; sampling and measures of periphytic community structure; primary production of periphyton; periphyton as an indicator of water quality; and the ecological aspects and applications of salt enrichment and diffusion in substrates.

The chapters also focus on the factors involved in the distribution and abundance of periphyton in lentic ecosystems and the distribution and abundance of this community and the main patterns found in floodplain environments. It also contains an artificial key to identify the genera of diatoms most commonly found in periphyton and metaphyton of aquatic environments and another to identify the genera of other algae in these same environments. The book is complemented by a chapter on periphytic bacteria from continental waters and another on heterotrophic periphyton. As can be seen, a very comprehensive approach that counted, for its realization, on the collaboration of experts from the best schools of Brazil and Argentina..
