In a world of increasing atmosphere CO2 there is intensified interestin the ecophysiology of photosynthesis and increasing attention is beinggiven to carbon exchange and storage in natural ecosystems. We need toknow much photosynthesis of terrestrial and aquatic vegetation willchange as global CO2 increases. Are there major ecosystems such asthe boreal forests which may become important sinks of CO2 and slowdown the effects of anthropogenic CO2 emissions on climate? Will thecomposition of the vegetation change as a result of CO2 increase?Fortunately, some 30 years of intensive research in the ecophysiologyof photosynthesis are serving well as regional and global models ofphotosynthesis and carbon exchange are being developed and refined. Thisvolume reviews the progress which has been made in understandingphotosynthesis in the past few decades at several levels of integrationfrom the molecular level to canopy, ecosystem and global scales.
