Etienne Raoul and Canterbury Botany 1840-1996. Publ.1998. illustr. 130 p. 4to. Paper bd.

The chapters in this book are based on papers given at a symposium, held in Christchurch, New Zealand on 23rd September 1996, to mark the150th anniversary of publication of the book 'Choix des plantes de laNouvelle-Zélande'. Its author, Etienne Fiacre Louis Raoul, was aFrench Naval doctor stationed at Akaroa, Banks Peninsula in 1840-43.His was the first account on Canterbury botany, and it is valuable tobotanists today because it includes the original descriptions andthe first illustrations of many native New Zealand plants. Although thebook focusses on botany, it covers a great deal more.
