Flora empolese. Elenco della flora vascolare della terra d'Empoli. 2022. 152 p. Paper bd. - In Italian.
Given the low environmental variability and the high level of anthropization, the Empoli area has in the past been the object of little attention by botanists, often more attracted by areas of greater naturalistic interest such as the mountains or the coasts. As a botanist by profession and passion, I considered it almost a moral imperative to lay the foundations for a complete knowledge of the characteristics of the vascular flora of the Empoli area, the land where I was born, grew up and still live. The research has highlighted a fair amount of floristic diversity: over 650 species, including plants of phytogeographic and conservationist interest: some Italian endemics, others normally present at significantly higher altitudes, or finally species that have their most internal stations in Tuscany in the Empoli area. Among the exotics, unfortunately the presence of numerous invasive aliens is negatively relevant. My hope is to stimulate curiosity and interest in the spontaneous flora on the part of the population. In these times, in fact, apart from “useful” or food plants, the rest of the plants tend to be seen as a sort of generic and anonymous green that forms the backdrop to our lives (a phenomenon also known as “plant blindness”). Finally, it is necessary to become aware of the worsening, in recent years, of the phenomenon of biological invasions and of the importance of protecting biodiversity, due to the high number of alien species and a management of the territory that is not always optimal from a naturalistic point of view.
