The Pico das Almas, in the Sierra de Espinhaco, is one of the highestpeaks in eastern Brazil and carries a varied vegetation includingextensive areas of 'campo rupestre', rich in endemic taxa includingmany orchids, bromeliads and Velloziaceae. An introduction to theenvironment and biogeography of the area is followed by keys anddescriptions for all vascular species so far recorded(over 1200).
