The area dealt with in this flora amounts approx. to 196.000 squaremiles. It is bounded on the north and north-east by a portion of themain chain of the Western Himalaya, and on the east by Bengal. On thesouth and south-west the boundary follows the watershed, from which allthe rivers west of the Son, and flowing into the Ganges and Jumna fromthese directions, take their rise. The watershed extends along thenorthern slopes of the numerous groups of hills known collectively asthe Vindhya mountains. The presentation of the plant diagnoses followclosely Sir John Hooker's arrangement given in vol. V (Append. I.B.)of Trimen's "Flora of Ceylon".
