While revising the forest flora of Kerala State, forest division wisestudy of the flora was taken as a preliminary step and an account of theflora of Palghat Forest Division is given here. The flora of this areais unique because large areas of this division lie near the "Palghatgap" of the Western ghats. Moreover the near virgin evergreen forests ofSilent Valley, Attappadi and Muthukulam are located here. The area isrich in medicinal and economically important species and the data onthese aspects are very much lacking in the published work. Therefore,while compiling this account importance is given to highlight theinformation on the medicinal, economic and industrial importance of thespecies.
