From the preface: This Report of the Nomenclature Section of the XIIIInternational Botanical Congress is presented not merely as an officialrecord of five days of deliberations and decisions. It is also a document in the history of nomenclature. The bare account of decisionstaken, as published in "Taxon" (30:904-911, Nov. 1981), cannot conveythe spirit of the discussions, the arguments for and against certainactions, or the often extensive debate preceding selection of words toexpress a desired amendment. It is our hope that taxonomists who werenot able to be present at the Section meetings will gain much pleasureand information from reading this report, as will those who were amongthe participants and can now relive the events.
