This project originated from an idea to create a guide for identifying the algae of the Orbetello Lagoon. Initially, the work was intended to consist of a series of data sheets featuring photographs of algae accompanied by descriptions. However, as the project progressed, its scope steadily expanded. In addition to macroalgae, we included higher plants - specifically aquatic, marine, and brackish-water angiosperms- as well as microphytes, the unicellular organisms capable of photosynthesis (microalgae, protozoa, and bacteria). We also included a few species that had disappeared more than forty years ago.
