This manual describes 172 species in 19 families, 6 orders of butterflies, which included all the insect species in China that are listed in the appendices of CITES, the List of National Key Protected Wild Animals, and the List on the Terrestrial Wild Animals under State protection which are beneficial or of important economic or scientific value, as well as other common insect species. For each species the Chinese name, English name and scientific name are given. It also includes the identification characteristics, behavior traits, geographic distribution, taxonomy and conservation class. Every species has one to four colourphotographs for easy identification.
