At the end of 1827, the Milanese publisher Lorenzo Sonzogno published an elegant 'almanac' - La Botanica de' Fiori dedicata al Bel Sesso - complete with floral plates by Vicenza engraver Giuseppe dell'Acqua. The anonymous author is the man of letters Giuseppe Compagnoni, an able divulger of 'feminine' scientific themes. The first in a successful series dedicated to the beautiful sex, the booklet deals with naturalistic themes ranging from elements of botanical science to gardens and the romantic language of flowers.
