An investigation of Thaddäus Haenke's colour- chart and cognatemanuscript materials in Madrid shows that the chart was used byHaenke on the Malaspina Expedition to encode colours for his ownbotanical illustrations. It has at its nucleus an early chart ofFerdinand Bauer, a chart given to Haenke in Vienna in 1786. Haenke'stestimony, that he lost all his books and papers in a shipwreck in theRio de la Plata in 1789, is therefore inaccurate.
