The Scandinavian Institute of African Studies arranged a workshop inMarch 1985 with the theme "Land management and survival". Scholars withfirst-hand experience of work in African countries were invited fromDenmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. The purpose of the workshop was toinitiate an exchange of views over problems of interpretation. Twodisciplinary perspectives were exchanged: one focussing on land, itsuses and management, and the other one on people, their resources andlives. This volume presents the papers read at the workshop. We havesought short and specific essays since the focus is on perspectives,emphasis and interpretation rather than on empirical presentations.
