The aim of this book is to analyse the historical sources concerning the knowledge that existed and continues to exist regarding coca leaves in the pre-Inca Andean world, the Inca Empire, the Spanish conquest, the republican period and the present day, and to present this to the reader so that they may gain as clear a picture as possible of this contentious issue, on which, despite the passing of centuries, controversy persists, and which can be summarised by the following questions: Is it a drug, and are coca chewers drug addicts? Is it simply a habit, and is its use beneficial to the body?
