Monkey Puzzle man. Archibald Menzies, Plant Hunter. 2007. 8 col. pls. XIII, 223 p. gr8vo. Paper bd.

From his humble beginnings in the mid - 18th century, Archibald Menzies came to be regarded as one of the foremost plant collectors of his time, providing many of the flowers grown in our gardens today. The background to his early years in rural Perthshire and work as a gardener in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are described in this publication, against the context of the high reputation of Scottish gardeners and plant collectors. Menzies collected numerous seeds and plant specimens during HMS Discovery expedition. At the end of his life Menzies was recognised as an important pioneer who laid down the foundations of North American botany for others to follow.
