From his humble beginnings in the mid - 18th century, Archibald Menziescame to be regarded as one of the foremost plant collectors of histime, providing many of the flowers grown in our gardens today. Thebackground to his early years in rural Perthshire and work as agardener in the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh are described in thispublication, against the context of the high reputation of Scotsgardeners and plant collectors. Menzies collected numerous seeds andplant specimens during HMS Discovery expedition. At the end of his lifeMenzies was recognised as an important pioneer who laid down thefoundations of North American botany for others to follow.
