Narcise v Sloveniji / Daffodils in Slovenia. 2018. Many col. photographs. 213 p. Hardcover. - Bilingual (English / Slovenian).
When we hear about daffodils, we often think of Golica, where the flowers of daffodils turn meadows white as if they were covered by snow. The book explains that these flowers can be found not only on Golica, but throughout Slovenia, from Karst to Pomurje. These spring flowers excited the authors so much that they decided to write this monograph.
This monograph on daffodils was written by Dr Nada Praprotnik, retired custodian for botany at the Museum of Natural History in Ljubljana, Dr Joe Bavcon, head of Botanic Garden of the University of Ljubljana, and MSc. Blanka Ravnjak, associate of the Botanic Garden of the University of Ljubljana. The entire monograph is dedicated to these beautiful plants that delight us in early spring, and provides a comprehensive description of their species. In the introduction, the authors provide a general description of the species, from historical sources, morphological characteristics, habitat conditions, as well as intra-species diversity, including descriptions of new varieties based on traits that have persisted in this species' garden culture in the Botanic Garden. In the second part of the monograph, the authors discuss the significance of this species in culture, from the origin of its name to its role in mythology, symbolism, Slovenian onomatology, literature and everyday life. This is followed by a chapter on its endangerment and efforts to preserve this species, with a review of its distribution in Slovenia. The monograph is concluded with a chapter on daffodil use and an extensive list of literature, allowing readers to study this species further.
The monograph on daffodils provides a comprehensive overview of this species, taking readers on an almost holistic journey through the life of daffodils, their meaning in culture and chances for their preservation, while presenting new information by the authors.
