Summary (partly): A floristic study was made of the Characeae ofTasmania based on extensive collection and an examination of availableherbarium specimens. 28 species are recognised for Tasmania: 9Chara-species, 17 Nitella's, 1 Lamprothamnium and 1 Tolypella; 4 are newfor the state of Tasmania. All taxa are described and figured. A "Keyto the species of Tasmanian Characeae" makes determination possible.Two new species are described: Nitella haagenii and Nitella monopodiata.
