The book "Conifers" covers both general topics and specific taxonomic issues. The general topics are covered in 65 pages at the beginning and end of the 360-page book. These cover taxonomic units, an introduction, the grouping of tree species, the influence of ecological factors, dendrochronology and dendrochronology, the characteristics of the conifer class, the distribution and regional composition of coniferous forests, the possibilities for growing and using alien tree species in Estonia, and the characteristics of the growth and development of alien conifers.

In the more specific section, readers will find identification tables and diagrams for conifers based on both shoots and cones, accompanied by photographs and descriptions of families, species, and forms. The taxonomic section describes 21 conifer families and nearly 90 species belonging to them (species variants are not considered separate species). Most conifer families and species originate from the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere or the cool mountain ranges south of it, but the most important conifers of the southern hemisphere are also included in the book.

The second edition of "Coniferous Trees" has been updated with regard to the most important coniferous tree species, as there have been notable changes in their survival rates and the height of growing trees over the past few decades. Sixty new photos have also been added to the book. The subtitle "A Handbook of Tree Science" is an abbreviation of Prof. A. Mathiesen's 1934 publication Dendrology, which included a 170-page taxonomic treatment of conifers.

Since it would have been impossible to cover the entire field of dendrology at a high level in a single book, the author published Dendrology and Park Management (640 pages) in 2019, which deals with deciduous trees in its taxonomic section.
