A heavy book (6.1 kg). - The author, prominent Costa Rican biologist, studied orchids over several decades. He dissected a broad series of flowers under microscope, analyzed the diversity of their forms, and presented the results in a technical fashion, with meticulous annotations. He did this in the form of watercolors, so that examining his notes is to discover the fantastic work of art, in which the specimens acquire life and, often, a threedimensional aspect. This book presents over 1000 of his unpublished watercolors, with their corresponding annotations. Included are data on variation that occurs within and between species, which is relevant in biology.
