The purpose of this volume is to inform the agricultural and scientificcommunity of the outcome of the meeting of the British Society for PlantPathology held at Leeds, which was the first attempt to bring togetherinternational experts in the population dynamics and population geneticsof plant pathogens. The book is unique in assembling many differentideas and concepts in the population biology of plant pathogens whichare relevant to the long-term development of rational methods of diseasecontrol in major crops. Deficiencies in our understanding arisingthrough lack of appropriate theory or inadequacy of the available dataare identified, and the practical applications being developed and casestudies with particular pathosystems are described.
