This guide is the successor to the Crossbill Guide Eastern Rhodopes. This second edition describes a much larger part of the Bulgarian part of the range, covering the higher Western Rhodopes, the dry grasslands and shrublands of the Sakar hill country (with its large numbers of birds of prey) and the marshes of the plain of Thrace. The number of routes in the Eastern Rhodopes has been expanded and the existing routes have been updated.

The Rhodope Mountains stretch along Bulgaria's southern border with Greece. Although the Rhodopes are still relatively unknown, the area is fast becoming one of the continent's most promising wildlife destinations.
