There are extremely diverse inland freshwater ecosystems in China and their diatom floras are largely underexplored. Here, the authors report a study of the diatom genus Ulnaria in Hunan, Guizhou, and Qinghai provinces, China during the period of 2014-2022. 23 new Ulnaria species have been found and described. A key to the Ulnaria species that have been described from China is provided.

The main morphological characteristics for 63 Ulnaria taxa are summarized. The whole life history of Ulnaria is revealed for the first time. Several conclusions for the characterization of Ulnaria are drawn. The closed valvocopula is proposed as a definition character for the genus Ulnaria.
