The plains of Tamil Nadu from sea-shores of Bay of Bengal up to
500 feet level of various places do not have much favourable climatic
conditions to the existence of ferns as in the higher elevations of hill
stations like Valparai, Ooty and Kodaikanal. But now-a-days, as the
ferns are considered as more important ornamental and medicinal
plants, it is important to study and conserve them all over the
country. Therefore, the fern flora of the plains has been described
in the present book. It will be more useful to the future Scientists
and Horticulturists for further investigations in these lines. For the
first time, the ferns of the plains of Tamil Nadu have been studied,
as far as the author is aware of.
