Tenebrosi)/ Excluded Speciesand Nomina Dubia/ References/ Index to names. - From the introduction:In many cases the basidiomes are xeromorphic with a tough, firm texture and are long-lived, consequently they have been frequently collected b ybotanists and explored so that large collections have accrued in all the major herbaria. However, species determination has remained exceptionally difficult owing to a combination of a high degree of polymorphism, often a secondary development of protective structures anda complex microstructure. Indeed, some Lentinus species are said to havethe most complicated structure of all fungi. A number of species are economically important as agents of timber decay, whilst others are widely used for their esculent and supposedly therapeutic properties.
