Originally published in 1981, this volume marked the 150th anniversary of the acquisition by the University of Cambridge of thesite for its "New Botanic Garden".This book gives a brief history of botanical and horticultural sciencein Cambridge from its beginning in medieval medical botany until theestablishment of specialised modern branches of botany in the presentcentury. With special reference to the Botanic Garden it shows howthe characters of people and institutions shaped the developmentof the science, and stresses the continuity of the tradition ofherborising established by John Ray in the seventeenth century. Muchmaterial, from University archieves, is new.
