Morales Valverde, Ramon

Una flora literaria. l mundo vegetal en la obra de Cervantes. 2016. Many col. figs. 249 p. gr8vo. Paper bd.- In Spanish.

Several authors have dealt with this subject, but always taking the author's main work, Don Quixote, as the object of study. This is the first work that deals with a complete repertoire of the plants and plant products cited by Cervantes in his extensive work. Ramón Morales has extracted almost 1,400 quotations (490 correspond to Don Quixote) that make direct reference to plants, uses, plant formations and crops, or as a literary or symbolic resource, especially in his poetic language. A total of 184 plant species are mentioned: some are frequently cited, others only once, in very different contexts and with very different intentions and meanings. The description of each plant is accompanied by numerous illustrations and photographs that facilitate its recognition.

It can be affirmed that Cervantes knew very well the natural environment in which he moved during the numerous trips he made throughout his life, showing a special interest in the practical and utilitarian sense of vegetation.
