The Australian political region includes a number of Islands in the Indian Ocean, the Coral Sea, the Tasmanian Sea and the Southern Ocean. For practical reasons, a decision was taken early in planning the "Flora of Australia" to exclude these islands from the main work and cover them separately in one volume. Such a work would be used more easily than a treatment spread through 48 volumes. The number of species on the islands was too great for a single volume, so Lord Howe and Norfolk Islands have been placed in one volume (=volume 48) and the remainder in volume 50.
