Contents (Main headings): A survey is given of the family Ceramiaceae(Rhodophyta), with the exception of the genus Ceramium, as it occurs in the south- western part of the Cape Province, South Africa. The area covered stretches between St. Helena Bay in the north, via the Cape Peninsula, to Infanta in the east.In the group under study 38 species and 2 additional subspecific categories are distinguished, including representatives of 12 of the recognized tribes in the family, and a total of 24 genera.Eight species, viz. ANTITHAMNION PSEUDOARMATUM, PLATYTHAMNION CAPENSE,AMOENOTHAMNION LYCOPODIOIDES, ANTITHAMNIONELLA TORMENTOSA, MICROCLADIAGLORIA-SPEI, PLEONOSPORIUM PATERNOSTER, GRIFFITHSIA SUBBICONICA andLAURENCIOPHILA MINIMA, as well as two varieties, viz. ANTITHAMNIONDIMINUATUM var. POLYGLANDULUM and GYMNOTHAMNION ELEGANS var. BISPORUM, are described as new to science. Several other species do not appear to have been recorded from Cape before. Full morphological descriptions and illustrations are given of all the species, as well as a key to their identification.
