Vegegraphy of China.

Volume 17: 1: Qiao Xianguo: Stipa Grasslands. 2 volumes. 2026. illus. 1120 p. gr8vo. -Chinese, with Latin nomenclature.

Following an overview of *Stipa* grasslands globally and within China, this volume classifies China’s *Stipa* grasslands into 32 formations, 129 association groups, 436 associations, and 72 communities. This classification is based on dominant species and key structural characteristics, utilizing nationwide survey data from *Stipa* grassland sample plots. The text provides systematic descriptions of their geographical distribution, natural environments, species composition, and community structures, while also outlining the biological characteristics, dynamics, succession patterns, values, and conservation status of the dominant species defining each formation. Rich in data and illustrations, the volume draws upon detailed surveys from 1,186 sample sites comprising 3,450 quadrats (each site measuring 20 m × 50 m, with 3 - 5 randomly placed 1 m × 1 m quadrats used for detailed analysis). It presents tables detailing quantitative characteristics - such as structure and species composition - for formations, associations, and communities, as well as statistical summaries of typical quadrats for association groups. Additionally, the book features photographs illustrating the physiognomy and structure of these classification units, including the association groups.
