For a long time it has been recognized that forests are under stress inmany parts of the world. This is true for natural as well as for managedforest ecosystems. A number of natural site conditions related toparameters such as geology, soil, climate and weather conditions, areassociated with well-known stress factors like drought, winter damage,water logging and biotic disease. Besides these natural stress factors,anthropogenic impacts also influence the vitality of forests adversely;the SO2 fumigation damage is a well-known case. Man-made effects on thenutrient supply of forest soils and on the nutritional status of thetrees, respectively, have taken place for centuries in many forestareas. Land use history and forest management practices appear to exerta much more powerful influence on the actual nutritional status offorest trees and stands than the deposition of air pollutants. Anincrease in our knowledge of the status and reaction of forest ecosystems has always produced recommendations for forest practice.
